How do you make work more fun? With a committee. As the team grew from a small and close-knit crew to a huge organization I wanted to protect and cultivate the best parts of our collaborative and supportive culture. So I started the Sunshine Committee to strengthen morale, recognize milestones, increase team building, and offer skill-building events and programming.
I launched the Uber Book Club and Speaker Series so that we could read books that celebrated our team values, and then hear from the author themselves for a live discussion at our offices. I ran programming, invited the authors, and branded the events with event posters and wrap-up emails.
To improve psychological safety, the number one key to healthy teamwork, we held improv trainings with Second City and Speechless to strengthen our collaboration, presentation, and active listening skills. I also organized various offsites.
To improve recognition and reward tenure I worked with design and leadership to create the Uberversary cube which are awarded to marketing members on their yearly Uberversary. And, when the mood was low I’d make sure there were 300 In-N-Out cheeseburgers and fries in the kitchen. Plus, for the holidays, we’d paint Calvin and Hobbes on all the glass of the conference rooms and the windows to keep things festive.
